March 2010
Okay A Sister’s Gift finally got its official launch day – a brilliant sunny blue afternoon sandwiched in between two weeks of sleet and freezing winds – for which I was very grateful! The venue, The Cathedral room at the Visitor’s Information Centre in Rochester High street couldn’t have been more perfect as it’s set right in the heart of the novel’s location. Delicious canapés were served, a champagne toast was drunk, and afterwards about 50 of us trooped down to the grounds of Rochester castle to set off a huge bunch of red helium balloons complete with everyone’s wishes attached, just like in the book. I’d been warned the balloons would separate immediately and all fly off in different directions but miraculously they didn’t. Maybe it was a current of wind that caught them and held them all together, but you could have heard a pin drop as we all stood and watched them float off into the still afternoon, still flying together after a good five minutes. Truly magical!
As with all publication dates, the previous few weeks have been absolutely hectic. I did several radio interviews and BBC South east ran a lovely piece on the novel with some super shots of Rochester bridge. This can be viewed here. As a lovely touch, The Bridge Wardens’ Trust kindly lent me the drawing of the Old Rochester Bridge which is mentioned in the book – here it is, with me and my son the artist!
The March edition of Writer’s monthly also ran a feature on moi as did the Sun - image available soon
The talk at Allington library last week was very well received - a lovely audience, who asked lots of intelligent questions.
Yesterday some more wonderful news came in from my agent, in the shape of some more foreign sales. Apparently A Sister’s gift has just sold to Portugal. Even more exciting, translation rights for Little Miracles has just sold to China!
